Hypertext Nature of the Talmud

Talmud as hypertext documentThis is a typical page of the Talmud. The text in the middle is the Mishnah, or commentary. The text surrounding the Mishnah explains and expands on individual words or phrases found in the Mishnah. An explanation can continue for many pages. The Talmud is one of the world's earliest forms of hypertext although some scholars believe that some older Greek oral works, such as Homer's Odyssey, which included explanations of arcane words in the text, should get precedence.

Thanks to Eliezer Segal for his contribution.
